Two Queenstowners have left to represent New Zealand at the inaugural Youth Olympic Winter Games.

Hamish Bagley, 15, will compete in the snowboard halfpipe while Callum Burns, 15, has been selected for ice hockey.

The pair left last Sunday for Innsbruck, Austria, where the games kick off tomorrow.

Callum won’t be part of an ice hockey team but competing in an individual skills event.

“It’s a series of skills like speed, shooting accuracy and how hard you can hit a puck.

“It’s going to be a great experience. I’m looking forward to it and I’ll just do my best. I started when I was seven and have been doing this for a few years now.”

Hamish, whose father Roy will be accompanying him and the NZ team, says he’s fresh from a training stint in the  United States and can’t wait to take part.

The pair will be among more than 1000 young winter Olympians aged 14 to 18
