Wakatipu kids’ eyes were wide and mouths hung open when Sarah Ulmer pulled out her Olympic gold medal this afternoon.
The day was special for over 60 kids – who are on the School Holiday Programme held at Queenstown Events Centre – as the Olympic gold medallist spent an hour answering questions and talking about her golden journey.
“She’s my super hero, I have always loved her,” 6-year-old Madi McLean says.
“We got to see the gold medal, one day I want to win a medal at the Olympics – it’s been the best day ever.”
Ulmer is the first New Zealander to win a cycling gold medal at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens where she set numerous world records.
She told the eager bunch that after winning the gold medal she went for a run around the Olympic village.
“I hadn’t run in three years because I was always cycling, so I went for a run and then went and got McDonald’s.”
She says it’s not always about winning.
“I’ve raced over 1000 times and 980 times I’ve lost the races.”
She has been travelling the country on a nationwide tour as an ANZ Olympic ambassador.
The ANZ tour - which stops in 29 towns - also features Olympic champion and former world record holder swimmer Danyon Loader and Olympic gold medallist Hamish Carter.
Lakes Leisure marketing coordinator Sophie Kennedy says it is an amazing opportunity for kids to meet an Olympian and discover what it’s really like.
Ulmer and Hamish Carter are speaking at the Queenstown Events Centre this evening (Thursday).
