Wakatipu High netballers are heading out of town to get valuable court time with kids their own age.
A new three-week competition has been set up between Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra high schools, starting next Wednesday.
Mini-tournaments will be held in Cromwell on May 11 and 18, with the final games played in Queenstown on May 25.
Four Wakatipu High teams will take part, while the school’s top team will travel to Gore most Wednesdays to compete in the Southland secondary school league.
Local high school coach Di Griffiths says the school has four fewer netball teams this year – and she thinks the lack of local competition is a contributing factor.
Griffiths is “excited” about the youngsters getting more time to practise playing against their peers before they head off to South Island competitions later in the season.
“It’s about getting them to play kids their own age because they get disheartened playing against the women and getting beaten all the time. It’s like being the little fish in the big pond type of scenario.”
Despite fewer high school teams in the Wakatipu netball draw, more primary school teams have filled the void, netball secretary Kay O’Connell says. Forty-five teams are hitting the courts this season – which starts on Saturday – compared to 46 sides in 2010.
Last year’s premier team Arrowtown United will play in Wanaka on a Friday night, rather than being part of Queenstown’s Saturday draw.
