Top talent: Wakatipu High Year 9A’s Lisa Milliken takes a shot while teammate Te Paea Dix and opposition goal keep Maddie Kelly look on
An unbeaten Queenstown netball team is proving age doesn’t matter when it comes to winning.

Wakatipu High team Year 9A has an unblemished record so far this season – despite being the youngest Senior A division side playing in the Events Centre competition.

The girls – aged between 12 and 14 – continued their winning ways last Saturday, thrashing WHS C schoolmates 60-18.

Coach Corinne Dix says the teen team is a well-oiled machine – most have played together for six years.

“The more you play together, the more you know each other’s styles. They’re just maturing with their netball,” Dix says, adding taking on older and taller opponents has been a learning curve.

Last week's results

This Saturday’s draw

Senior A: 10.30am WHS Yr9A v WHS B; noon Glenorchy v WHS C;
Bye: Executive Accom

“Because they’re playing ladies, they have that disadvantage of psyching themselves out … so that’s been a big thing for them to get past,” Dix says.

Three of the side’s 13-year-old starlets – Lisa Milliken, Te Paea Dix and Brodie Proctor – also play in the Wakatipu rep side that won the Central Southland Rep tournament in Winton last Sunday.

The Year 9A youngsters will be put to the test against other top-notch high school teams at their first South Island Secondary Schools tournament in Christchurch, from July 17-21.

WHS Year 10A, which plays in the local premier league, is also competing in Christchurch.

“That’ll be a real eye-opener for them … it’ll be interesting to see how they go,” Dix says.

Dix is handing over the coaching reins for the tournament since she’ll be on tour with Queenstown social netball team Speight’s 8.

To fund the girls’ trip – costing about $800 each – the teams have a final garage sale fundraiser at 40 Douglas Street in Frankton this Saturday from 10am.
