A female tourist who lost consciousness after crashing on Queenstown’s luge (above) ended up being flown to hospital in Frankton.
St John ambulance paramedics called a chopper for the 31-year-old Middle Eastern woman, suffering suspected back and head injuries.
St John Queenstown operations manager Alana Reid says the woman came off the luge – based at the top of the gondola – at 5.30pm on Monday.
Jeff Staniland, chief executive of luge operator Skyline Enterprises, says staff were alerted to the crash by the woman’s companions and she was found dazed.
“She said ‘I’m fine, I’m fine’, lost consciousness and they called an ambulance.”
The woman discharged herself from Frankton’s Lakes District Hospital later the same night but went for a check-up in Dunedin Hospital on Tuesday.
Staniland says luge manager Blair Deasy spoke to her travel companions on Tuesday and she seemed to be fine.
An internal report into the crash will be compiled.
“It’s usually a combination of speed and poor driving,” Staniland says.
“As far as I’m aware this is not a hotspot.”
