Holding court: Queenstown teen netball talent Lucy Robins
|
A Queenstown teen netballer is joining seasoned veterans in Southland’s Lois Muir Challenge squad.
“It’s a big step-up from what I’ve ever done before but it’s a really good experience,” super-sporty defender Lucy Robins, 15, says.
She’s the youngest member of the Southland side, captained by stalwart Dana Bond. Southern Steel’s Emma Moynihan and ex-Sting rep Debbie Telfer are also in the line-up.
Lucy: “I’m really stoked. I wasn’t originally in the official team, but then one of the girls pulled out so I got a call-up.”
She admits being a tad intimidated, “but once I get on court I forget about it and just play”.
The year 11 Wakatipu High student has been earmarked for higher honours – she’s already been in the New Zealand Talent Development Programme Southland squad plus the Southland under-17 representative development sides.
Lucy’s also in the newly-formed Southland Advanced Netball Academy (SANA)– a conditioning and specialist session programme – meaning travel to Invercargill at least once a month, on top of Friday practices during the six-week Lois Muir Challenge.
“Invercargill will probably be like my second home during the netball season this year,” the starlet says.
“It’s quite a big commitment but I’m passionate about it.”
She hopes to secure a spot in the NZ secondary schools squad and trial for the national side later this year.
Through SANA, Lucy tackles a tailor-made workout regime twice a week but still isn’t as busy as her older sister Olivia, 17, who’s making waves as a novice rower, she says.
Southland face Otago in Gore for round three of the Challenge on Sunday.
