These kids (right) from Arrowtown Shukokai karate club show off the trophy they’re about to defend.

The youngsters – aged eight and upwards – compete in the Southern District Multi-style tournament at Tapanui on Saturday.

And they’re determined to return home with the trophy, which they won for the first time when the event was last held, in October 2008.

“It’s a big ask for a club that’s pretty new to the scene,” says Arrowtown coach Jackie Leat.
“But the kids are on good form and well up for the challenge.”

Queenstown’s Samurai Karate club is also sending a team to the competition, which attracts fighters from Dunedin, Gore, Oamaru, Wanaka, Cromwell and Invercargill.

The Arrowtown team includes: Anna Leat, Brodie Proctor, Olivia Jones, Alex Sage, Imogen McGregor, Bradley Leydon, Kim Paisley, Nicky Morris, Harry Rodger, Lilly Rodger, Chaitanya Proctor and Michael Leat.
