Synergies key: Bill English

Local health authorities will do what they want with proceeds from any sale of the Wakatipu’s hospital, Queenstown’s MP says.
Asked what should happen to the dough if Lakes District Hospital at Frankton is sold, Queenstown MP and deputy Prime Minister Bill English says: “The money belongs to Southern District Health Board. They’ll do with it whatever they like, whatever suits their overall interest.”
English adds: “The Government is committed to funding services required.”
A sale is on the cards if SDHB’s proposal for a one-stop shop Integrated Family Health Centre flies – and is located at a planned facility at Remarkables Park.
Any sale is on hold while the Government’s National Health Board conducts a new round of consultation on the future of Wakatipu healthcare.
English denied Queenstown was a guinea pig for a nationwide rollout of IFHCs, adding the resort had a unique opportunity for its health services to have “interaction with the private sector”.
“We want to get synergies where the public services can benefit from that interaction.”
