Queenstown Rovers women’s soccer team may have played their way into New Zealand history books with an amazing 38-0 drubbing.

The incredible result happened during the side’s season opener with Invercargill rivals Queens Park in the Southland Women’s premier competition for the Kolk trophy last Sunday.

And the Rovers could have netted at least 50 times if they hadn’t eased up, coach Darren Rewi says.

“We were leading 20-0 at half-time and to give Queens Park a better chance, in the second half we played with our forwards in

It's a crazy old game

Madagascar-based AS Adema beat their arch-rivals Stade Olympique de L’Emyrne by an astonishing 149-0 in October 2002.

This is the world record for the highest scoreline in football, according to the book of Guinness World Records.

However, all the strikes were own goals.

The SOE players did it as a protest over an early refereeing decision. Scottish side Arbroath hold the record for the second-highest scoring game in history.

In 1885 they beat minnows Bon Accord – which used to be a cricket team, Orion Cricket Club – 36-0.

They were mistakenly invited to enter the Scottish Cup instead of Orion FC, an Aberdeen-based team. The highest-scoring international match came in 2001 when Australia beat American Samoa 31-0 in a World Cup qualifier.

defence and put our defenders up front,” Rewi says.

“We did go on to score another 18 goals but if we’d kept the pressure up it could easily have finished about 50-
0.”

Standout Rovers striker Mary Fraser led the rout with 11 goals in an away game that produced a goal almost every two minutes – including nine hat-tricks.

Among the other high scorers was Leeanne Couch who bagged six, while Sahara MacDonald and Rose O’Neil banged in five goals each.

“The girls didn’t really enjoy winning by such a big margin. The result was mind-boggling but we would rather have had a good competitive game,” Rewi says.

The game’s ruling body Football NZ says the result could well be the highest goal margin recorded in the country for an organised match.

“Down the years we have seen one or two 20-0 results in cup ties when big teams can be drawn against lesser opposition, but no one can recall a team winning 38-0 before,” spokesman Jamie Scott says.
