Local Ice Blacks: Braden Lee (left) and Brett Speirs
A bronze medal is at stake when New Zealand’s ice hockey team play Mexico today in the division two world champs.

The Ice Blacks lost 2-0 to host Australia in their third game in Melbourne last night.

In their first game they lost 6-4 to top-rated Serbia before a history-making 5-0 win over Belgium.

It was the Ice Blacks’ first win over Belgium and was also significant because Belgium ranks four places higher, in 36th.

Queenstown Braden Lee, who scored a goal against Serbia, also scored one of the Ice Blacks’ five goals against Belgium and fellow Southern Stampede player Brett Speirs contributed two assists.

Other locals in the Ice Blacks squad are Bert Haines, Mitchell Frear and Jamie Moore-Carter.

There are five teams in the division two champs but North Korea defaulted.
