Winter wonder: Ex-Weta frontman, Cairo Knife Fight's Aaron Tokona plays at World Bar on Thursday night as part of its Winter Sounds gig
A Hori Buzz is a band based on shifting sands.
With a jam-orientated set and fluid line up, it’s difficult to know exactly what to expect from the funk, dance and house band.
But with a principal trio of musicians such as Aaron Tokona, Riki Gooch and LA Mitchell, that is half the fun.
Singer, guitarist and loop-pedal expert Tokona, who leads the band, is also one half of the excellent Cairo Knife Fight – a guitar-driven rock duo with Nick Gaffaney, who has often appeared with A Hori Buzz.
Wellington-based Cairo, due to tour the US this year, offers a different creative outlet for the endlessly creative Tokona.
The former Weta frontman is currently joined in A Hori Buzz by renowned producer and drummer Riki Gooch, and powerful vocalist LA Michell – who has opened for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie. Tokona’s cousin Hori completes the line-up.
Together they proved an incredibly popular live act at festivals and gigs during the past year.
Gooch was one of the founding members of Trinity Roots before leaving to follow solo projects and drum for everyone from Fat Freddy’s Drop to Crowded House.
Gooch produced Kiwi soul sister Hollie Smith’s second album and she is also on the Winter Sounds
Just $60 for such a line up is a steal.
