Five Wakatipu youngsters have been chosen to represent Central Otago at national hockey tournaments next month.

Hannah Hide, Kayley Paterson and Riley Chandler will join the region’s top squad for the national girls’ under-13 Collier Trophy competition in Palmerston North while Pierie McLeod and Chester Rosie will play in the region’s boys’ under-13 team at the Hatch Cup in Carterton.

The kids – who currently play together and finished third overall in their mixed Central Otago primary A competition last weekend – were picked for nationals at a recent rep trial, coach Jude Chandler says.

“It’s been their aim to make teams that go to national tournaments – that’s the pinnacle for under-13 hockey – so they are extremely happy,” she says.

Meanwhile, hockey players Tessa Paterson, Ben Evans, Ayden Boyd and Finn Donovan have been selected for the Central Otago under-13 development teams – they’ll be attending the South Island Festival of Hockey tournament in Timaru from October 16-22.

The national comp kids are busy raising money to pay for their trips – and are keen for sponsors.

“The girls have got to raise $1600 each to go to nationals and the boys slightly less,” Chandler says.

“It’s big money but at the end of the day it’s a life experience and they’re mixing with the best in their age group across the country.”
