A fractured spine forced Queenstown mechanic Malcolm King to rethink his career three years ago – and he hasn’t looked back since.

King broke two vertebrae in the middle of his back when snowboarding in Canada three years ago.

While bedridden, he decided to venture out on his own to start his mobile mechanic Tech 2 U business.

“It gave me time to think about what I wanted to do. I realised that what I enjoyed most about being a mechanic was not working in a workshop but keeping the customer happy and doing a good job for them.”

King specialises in Toyota and Lexus diagnostics, maintenance, servicing and repairs and is a recognised “environmental champion” within the Toyota dealership.

“I really enjoy helping people and providing quality service,” he says.

“Some people don’t like leaving home to drive to a workshop, so by me coming to them it can be very convenient for people like the elderly, or mums at home.”
