Numbers man: Willem Ebbinge
|
Mathlete Willem Ebbinge is one of the smartest 10-year-olds in the country.
The Remarkables Primary pupil came second in the recent New Zealand Mathletics Challenge – beating more than 171,000 youngsters.
It follows his success in the World Education Games earlier this year – he finished sixth in maths for eight to 10 year olds out of 5.3 million children.
The Jack’s Point youngster also came first in NZ for spelling in the same contest.
“It’s great to finish second in the mathletics challenge.
“The first day was curriculum questions and on the second you had to answer as many as you could between 8am and 11pm,” he says.
Willem’s mum Becky, who hand-fed him sandwiches while he completed the brain-busting challenge, says he got 15,000 points from the first day’s questions. He added another 51,399 points during the second day’s 15-hour maths bender, a rate of almost one correct answer per second.
“Some sections he can answer 100 in 60 seconds – he’s a machine,” Becky says.
Willem also regularly busks in Queenstown and his soccer team recently won the South Island Championships.
