Ever wondered what this sign at the entrance to the Kawarau Falls Station building site means? It’s Japanese for “No entry”. Fulton Hogan construction manager Alan Black explains: “We had lots of Japanese people, mainly in campervans, coming onto the site who couldn’t read any sign in English.”

  • Disgraced former sports broadcaster Tony Veitch has been lying low in town recently. He’s awaiting a dep­­­ositions hearing to decide whether he’ll stand trial for charges of assaulting a former girlfriend. Veitch married former local Zoe Halford at Lake Hayes early this year.
  • A memorable exchange from this week’s Chamber of Commerce Great Debate. Local greenie Karen Swaine: “How many cows is [sic] too many cows?” NZ First leader Winston Peters replies: “As someone who comes off a dairy farm ... when the power goes off, any number of cows is too many darn cows.”
