  • Writing about local wine characters in Pete Gawron’s newly released Saffron cookbook, Wakatipu-based movie actor and wine producer Sam Neill says: “Some you could introduce to your grandmother reasonably safely; some, frankly, would startle the horses.”
  • In last Sunday’s Washington Post, travel writer Barbara Bradlyn Morris suggests Queenstown’s slogan ought to be: “Home of Extreme Sports and Hearty Sun-Bronzed Young People in Denim Cutoffs.” Really?
  • Team New Zealand yachting boss Grant Dalton had to restrain himself at a local function last Saturday, telling partygoers he had a 6am Sunday conference call with Team Alinghi’s Ernesto Bertarelli, Russell Coutts and Brad Butterworth to try and sort out the America’s Cup stalemate.
  • I’m familiar with the word “corduroy” as in fabric, but it’s also crept into The Remarkables snow report this week: “Groomed corduroy surface on all of the main trails.”
