- If you looked round town for the most qualified person to replace Destination Queenstown boss David Kennedy, who stepped down last month, the irony is you’d probably settle on his new wife Mandy, who has considerable tourism sales and marketing experience.
- A new director of GNS Science, the Crown Research Institute focusing on natural hazards among other things, is local barrister, planning commissioner and former accountant Jane Taylor, who chairs council quango Lakes Leisure.
- American zillionaire and philanthropist Julian Robertson flew into Queenstown last week for a getaway at Blanket Bay. Perhaps Robertson, who owns the Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers lodges in the North Island, was checking out the competition.
- Also in town last week for a private function was Kiwi opera diva Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Appropriately she was staying at Millbrook, where she starred at the resort’s first outdoor concert in the mid-1990s.
