  • Talk about Queenstown having the ear of government – the new Prime Minister is taking the tourism portfolio while the deputy PM is our new MP. By contrast, the outgoing tourism minister was so lowly ranked he couldn’t get back via the party list after losing his West Coast seat.
  • Speaking at the Queenstown launch of his Antarctica book last week, artist Grahame Sydney was apologetically explaining he didn’t yet have any copies to sell but could still take money from interested buyers.
At which guest Greg Turner piped up: “Like Blue Chip!”
  • Rumour has it that local golfer Andrew “Swampy” Earl was complaining about his lycra skivvy irritating his armpit during a recent tournament at Kelvin Heights. After finally peeling off the lycra at the 18th, to his golf companion’s dismay out popped his wife’s very skimpy lacy undergarment.
  • Further to an item last week, the gig that Kiwi opera diva Kiri Te Kanawa came to town for was a conference at Arrowtown’s Mount Soho Winery.
  • Local Ros Greig celebrated her 60th last Saturday by inviting friends to a mad hatter’s tea party.
  • If our new $460,000-a-year District Health Board superboss Brian Rousseau gets a hefty pay rise – and his new salary is presently being decided – then, according to The Listener, Rousseau could join New Zealand’s other four bureaucrats paid more than $500,000 a year.
