Queenstown Climbing Club’s Pip Merry dangles from a Wye Creek Project Wall overhang – all for a stunning photo competition entry.

Such vertigo-inducing images of climbers tackling Queenstown’s cliffs are among the entries in the club’s inaugural Alpine Photo Competition.

It’s open for submissions until the end of this month, with details on the club’s website.

Organiser Guillaume Charton, who took the shot of Merry, says: “The objective is to stimulate interest in climbing photography.

“We’ve had more than a dozen entries but hope it will grow next year and become an established competition.
“The winner will be printed on a large canvas.”

Prize packs are from sponsors R&R Sport, Queenstown Cameras, Small Planet and Post Office Cafe.

Guillaume, who also has a short comedy film on climbing in Kingston selected as a finalist in the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival, says photos could in future make a club calendar.

In other club news, extreme mountaineer Alex Corpas presents a movie at World Bar this coming Tuesday.
