RWC officials expect the Oval – to be used as a training venue for England, Ireland and either Romania or Uruguay – to be firm, flat and have even coverage of the right sort of grass.
There also needs to be the right balance of worm activity. Right now, the turf experts are making sure there aren’t too many worms because their casts, or manure, affect soil drainage.
Normal spring turf “renovations”, like aerating and de-thatching, will be undertaken “a wee bit harder than normal”, turf manager Peter Domigan says.
