Canadian star skiers cleaned up at a giant slalom race at Coronet Peak today – but a flying Kiwi was hot on their heels.
Winter Olympian Ben Griffin (pictured) was the first New Zealander home in the Southern Lakes Cup event this morning. He tied for fourth place with Canadian Manuel Osborne-Paradis.
The podium was dominated by the Canadian men's team, with hot-shot Robbie Dixon taking out the top spot ahead of fellow teammates Tyler Nella in second and third-placed Ryan Semple.
The race attracted thirty-two alpine athletes from around the world and included competitors from the United States, Great Britian, Spain and Korea.
The event, created especially for the Canadian team, kick-started the racing calendar, says Coronet Peak race and events boss Richard Murphy.
Murphy adds: “It’s great to show international teams that we can put on a great World Cup-standard race. This is an extremely important event for athletes who are trying to advance to the World Cup later this year.”
