Blue skies and strong winds proved ideal conditions for kiters and windsurfers competing in the Big Queenstown Downwinder on Saturday.
The long-distance event from Glenorchy to Pigeon Island had been postponed numerous times before 25 competitors finally took to the water for the challenge.
Local Thomas Rold took out the fastest honours with his 17sq m kite, while Dunedin windsurfer Paul Vilestra was the first man home in his field.
Dunedin’s Simone Jackson was the quickest female, claiming the Jude Green memorial trophy, who the event is held in memory of.
Organiser Sue Bradley says it was an awesome day enjoyed by all.
“Even those who didn’t make it to the finish still had big smiles. To be lined up at the start with that many colourful sails and co-sailors in the spectacular setting of Glenorchy is quite a thrilling experience.”
