They’re frenetic: Queenstown band Rules of Addiction (from left) Al, Mo, Animal and Axl
Queenstown rock, metal, punk band Rules of Addiction have blistered through their first year at the pace of one of their songs.

The frenetic four-piece has already written and recorded an EP and album, and toured New Zealand since forming last October.

Singer/guitarist Mauricio Oliveira, 25, says: “To describe the music would probably be speed metal punk with political lyrics.

“Mostly people say we sound like old school Metallica mixed with the new generation like Avenged Sevenfold.”

Tracks are written by Brazilian Mo and British guitarist/vocalist Al Parr. They’re backed by Axl (Glen Balfour) on bass/vocals and Animal (Jordan McNally) on the drums, with the album produced by renowned Nathan Sowter.

Catch Rules of Addiction at Red Rock this Saturday from 9pm. Admission is free
