Winter highlights
A FOURTH annual Queenstown ski and snowboard highlights video put together by self-styled media assassin Matty Smith airs on Friday at Revolver bar.
Smith, who films and edits the footage, promises this season’s flick called Snow Circus II is packed with local riders – “guys that need sponsorship or guys that want to show their sponsors they can ride”.
He’s condensed about 18 hours of footage into an hour-long package. Highlights this year come from the Burton Open, Queenstown’s Park Life rail jam and a cameo from superstar snowboarder Shaun White.
The soundtrack is a compilation of music from bands who’ve played gigs at Revolver. The screening kicks off around 11pm.

Style on the slopes
WITH recent snowfalls, park rats will be gearing up for the third Slopestyle Series at The Remarkables on Saturday. It’s the second to last chance for skiers and snowboarders to put their skills to the test and aim for the cash prizes on offer. The four-part series, which attracts competitors from all over the region, began in July and finishes up on September 19. The entry fee of $25 is pooled to make up the cash prizes for each session. Registration begins at 8.30am and the comp starts at the Dirty Dog Terrain Park at 10.30am.
Rock the dancefloor
POPULAR Kiwi roots act dDub will provide a soundtrack for night skiing at Coronet Peak tomorrow night. The Queenstown regulars are the main gig during the ski field’s Big Night Ski Out – they’ll be playing on the base building deck for almost two hours from 7pm. “It costs nothing to watch the band and people are welcome to come and enjoy the music as well as take a few runs on their skis or snowboard under the stars,” ski area manager Hamish McCrostie says.
Speed demons
SKI racers will be getting their last major fix of extreme speed for the season this weekend. The Ski Racing NZ national ski race championships take place at Coronet Peak – giant slalom will be held tomorrow and the slalom racing is on Saturday.
Avalanche turnout
A FUNDRAISER focusing on avalanche awareness has raised almost $2000 – and counting - for Search and Rescue. Queenstown’s Sophie Brown (above) organised the event after being first on the scene of an avalanche outside Coronet Peak’s boundary that killed Queenstowner Ryan Campbell on August 2. Her screening of avalanche documentary The Fine Line at The World Bar last Thursday was so popular people had to be turned away. About 200 punters paying $10 each piled in, whilst the bar chipped in a further $107 in tips and donations on the night. A chuffed Brown says Search and Rescue plans to use the money to buy “lost person” rescue kits.
Who said it was spring?
It’s September, but local skifields yesterday morning reported some of the season’s best snowfalls. Coronet Peak got a 30cm topping, The Remarkables received 23cm, Cardrona 35cm and Treble Cone 25cm. Upper snow bases are all at least 140cm.
