On fire: Queensland Firebirds centre court player Lauren Nourse during the final battle against Central Pulse
|
Queensland’s Firebirds were too hot for Central Pulse in Queenstown’s Southern Steel pre-season netball tournament final today.
Pulse came back from six goals behind at half-time – 27 – 21 – to within two points of the Firebirds in the final minutes of the game, but Pulse couldn’t catch the faster team, which won 50 – 46.
The Pulse have claimed only a handful of wins in the past three years of the ANZ Championship, but were undefeated in the Queenstown competition until their finals loss.
In contrast, tournament hosts – injury-plagued Southern Steel – failed to win a single game.

Silver Fern stars Liana Leota and Leana de Bruin as well as Natasha Chokljat and Sheryl Scanlon were confined to the sideline with injuries, and the team had to rely on three last-minute ring-ins.
