Six-seater: Coronet Peak's new chairlift PICTURE: CORONET PEAK

Queenstown’s ski season is due to get underway today with the opening day of The Remarkables skifield.

Meanwhile, Coronet Peak’s flash new chairlift should be certified this weekend and ready to run for the skifield’s June 15 opening.

Skifield boss Nigel Kerr says the $20 million high-speed six-seater was “road-tested” on Wednesday with buckets of water on the chairs.

He expects it to be handed over to NZSki for commercial use on Monday.

“It’s just so quiet and smooth, so it’s going to be pretty awesome and a really good investment in Coronet Peak’s future.”

Gondola cabins will be added this summer to the Leitner Ropeways lift. It follows the line of the old Coronet Express.

Kerr says its snowmaking system’s been running at “absolute max” during this week’s cold spell. There’s about 20cm at the base area and 60cm up top.

“We’ve laid down some bloody good snow, and we’re still 10 days away from opening.”
