A Queenstown charity event run by Mountain Scene’s Philip ‘Scoop’ Chandler aims to raise at least $2000 for St John Wakatipu.

The Bayleys Brecon St Grunt is a knock-out style running event where competitors race side-by-side up and down the Brecon St steps which connect upper and lower Brecon streets.

‘‘It’s just the unique element of having these steps here — which we all know about and probably take for granted — in a hospo precinct, it’s a great combination.

‘‘I can tell you from experience running up and down those steps, it leaves even semi-fit males, my age, breathless.’’

It takes place during Waitangi weekend on Sunday, February 6, from 2 till 6pm, and will be MC’d by local broadcaster and councillor Craig ‘Ferg’ Ferguson.

Scoop says he seized on the idea as a way to bring some stimulus to the CBD.

‘‘The key thing is it’s a fun event with this idea of trying to liven up the CBD which is experiencing tough times.’’

Entries for 24 male competitors, 24 females and 12 mixed teams of three open today on eventfinda; more information’s available via ‘Bayleys Brecon St Grunt’ on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Scoop says he might make a cameo run.

Entry fees plus extra fundraising on the day will go towards St John, which will also
be in attendance.

The event welcomes spectators, who’ll be hosted by neighbouring hospitality venues — spectating is FOC, but a ticket must be obtained for entry.

There are prizes of $1000 each for the winning male, female and team, and several
spot prizes on the day.
