Bail approved: Rachel Faul
A young Queenstown woman charged in connection to a brutal kidnapping was released from prison custody yesterday.

Police approved bail for Rachel Maree Faul (above), 20, who’d spent just over a week at Christchurch Women’s Prison after being arrested almost a fortnight ago.

Her father Peter Faul confirms he picked her up yesterday after driving up to Christchurch. They’re expected to return home to Queenstown today.

Peter says he looking forward to seeing his daughter.

“Absolutely, like you wouldn’t believe.”

Rachel’s was the first arrest after an alleged attack and kidnapping of a 28-year-old Cromwell man near Arrowtown on November 26.

She was originally remanded without plea – and last Thursday Judge Raoul Neave refused bail, ordering her to next appear in Queenstown District Court on February 28. Judge Neave granted leave for a new bail application to be made as the investigation progressed.

Faul’s lawyer, Christchurch-based Jonathan Eaton, was expected to lodge an appeal in the High Court at Ashburton tomorrow but that wasn’t necessary after police approved bail.

A further seven Queenstowners have since been charged in relation to the incident.

It’s alleged a group of balaclava-clad men carrying a meat cleaver and a machete set upon the victim and his girlfriend at the Crown Range intersection on State Highway 6, before taking off with the man in a car and dumping him near Chartres Green in Arrowtown.

The men face charges of kidnapping and aggravated wounding and are due in court on Monday.
