From little acorns grow

Half a century of camping history is nearly ready for the world to see.

The Wakatipu High School Branches Trust has been busy working on a book to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the much-loved Year 10 Branches Camp.

School outdoor ed teacher Ken McIntyre says the camp’s one of the best-known aspects of the school.

It racked up its half-century last year, and the trust decided to mark the occasion by “recording a bit of history”, he says.

“For most people it’s one of their defining memories of the school.”

It had been tough tracking down photos from pre-2000, but McIntyre says the oldest image they’ve managed to get is from 1967.

A launch for the book will be held on November 16 at the school.

They’ve ordered about 5000, and McIntyre reckons they’ll be snapped up quickly.

“The camp has tremendous community support.

“It’s very exciting.”
