Cracks found: Skippers Canyon Bridge
Queenstown’s council is to temporarily close an historic bridge after new cracks were found in a support tower.

The Skippers Canyon Bridge, which is more than 100 years old, will close to all vehicle traffic from Monday.

Queenstown Lakes District Council network operations engineer Michael Wardill says the cracks at the top of a supporting stack stone tower were detected during a routine inspection.

“As a precaution we will close the bridge to all vehicular traffic.”

Urgent repairs will be carried out and council had endeavoured to contact all affected parties, Wardill says.

“This will have some impact on a handful of operators but clearly safety is paramount in situations like this,” he says.

“We’re fairly confident that the works will bring the bridge back up to full working order,” Wardill says.
