An exhibition celebrating Arrowtown’s original Chinese gold miners opens at Lake Hayes’ Amisfield Winery & Bistro this coming Monday. Arrowtown artist Jenny Mehrtens says Miners Gold – including this oil (left) entitled Digger – was inspired by the miners’ expressions and clothing.

“The plight and look of the Chinese miners fascinated me, so far from home in such a tough and hostile environment. I had to paint them to better get to know them.”

The exhibition – coinciding with celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold – runs until November 5.
