Queenstown soccer player Georgia Brown (right) is in Japan preparing to represent New Zealand in the under-20 World Cup.
Brown, 18, has trained in Auckland with the Junior Football Ferns squad since early this year and played in their successful Oceania qualifying round in April.
“I am ecstatic to be at my first world cup, it’s a dream come true,” Brown says.
The Ferns’ first-round games are against Switzerland on Sunday, world number one Japan next Wednesday and Mexico on August 26.
The first two games – which Brown’s parents Anna and Derek are attending – are at Sendai, near where last year’s devastating tsunami struck.
Brown was introduced to the sport at primary school in Arrowtown, starred for Dunedin’s St Hilda’s Collegiate and has represented Otago and Southern representative teams.
Next month the winger represents Football South in the national women’s league. In January she takes up a four-year soccer scholarship with Texas Tech in the United States.
