Football fever: (from left) Queenstown’s Kieran McIntyre, Wanaka’s Finn Moore and Gabriel Schwartz and Queenstown’s Jake Johnson
Four talented local football players are celebrating milestones as they prepare for a prestigious international tournament.

Queenstowners Kieran McIntyre and Jake Johnson along with Wanaka’s Finn Moore and Gabriel Schwartz are the four Central Otago players to make the Dunedin-dominated Otago United squad for the Milk Cup.

The Milk Cup, held in Northern Ireland in July, features some of the best junior teams in the world, including development squads from UK glamour-club Manchester United.

Last year, Kieran’s older brother William and fellow local Kai Inoue were the first selected from Central Otago for the Under 17 side.

“People from Central Otago never made it to the team before,” Kieran’s dad Ken McIntyre says.

“Now there are four boys so we’re really pleased.”

The team had a training run in Queenstown last weekend.

“That was another milestone for Central Otago. It’s all about milestones,” McIntyre says.

Otago United plays Northern England’s Bolton Wanderers, Ireland’s County Fermanagh and England’s Spurs in the first stage of the competition.
