Serves up: Queenstown tennis coaches Matt Davies (left) and Mark Milburn run a session on Tuesday at the newly resurfaced Arrowtown Tennis Club courts
Arrowtown’s fledgling tennis club has geared up for the coming season by resurfacing its two courts.

The Arrowtown Tennis Club has spent $20,000 filling in some minor cracks and covering its club courts with deco turf – the same surface used at grand slam the US Open.

Club president Johnny Stevenson says it’s hoped the slick new green surface will last for at least eight to 10 years.

“It was cracking – we were concerned if water gets in and then with frosts, it starts to lift up.

“Now it looks fantastic. It was going to cost more and more to do if we’d just left it,” he says.

The club, which boasts about 70 members, officially launched the new courts on its open day last Sunday.

Stevenson says the club itself hosts junior coaching run by Queenstown tennis coach Mark Milburn plus club
nights on Tuesday and Thursday, which are more social than serious.

“It’s more pull the racquet out of the garage and come down for a hit. It’s for people who just want to get out and knock a few balls around.”

Milburn says it’s great to have the cracks filled in.

The courts are also a bit spongier than the Queenstown club, he says.

“I don’t think a lot of people know this but there’s a cushion layer under the courts at Arrowtown.

“It’s a wee bit spongier. You get a wee bit of a higher bounce and it’s a bit quicker.

“And the cushion is supposed to be not so hard on the body,” Milburn adds.

Arrowtown club fees are $75 for a family, $50 per adult and $15 for juniors.
