Arrowtown is to host the New Zealand Gold Panning Championships to coincide with 150th celebrations marking the discovery of gold nearby.
The championships, run by the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust, will be held at Arrowtown’s Butlers Green, by the historic Chinese Village, on October 21.
First-timers as well as experienced gold-panners are encouraged to enter with great prizes on offer.
Categories include under-13s and under-16s as well as men’s, women’s open and veteran categories.
Team categories pitting towns, fire brigades and schools against each other are also planned.
Competitors have to race others in their heat to retrieve five to eight pre-counted flakes of gold.
Afterwards they get to keep the gold.
