Club discount: James Penwell
Queenstown Tennis Club is offering heavily reduced memberships to any first-timers signing up for the coming season.

The club, based at four sheltered courts in Queenstown Gardens, is offering year-long memberships for $150 to those who’ve never joined the club before. On top of the discount, new members will also get four free lessons from club coach Mark Milburn.

Memberships remain at $240 for existing members – if paid before October 31.

Club publicity officer James Penwell says the move to offer discounted memberships for new-comers is mainly aimed at getting new blood into the club.

“It’s really to encourage people into tennis and grow the club,” he says.

“It’s perfect for anyone who is brand new to the Wakatipu and for anyone who thinks they want to have a go at tennis but isn’t sure they want to commit themselves to $240.”

Court in session

Queenstown Tennis Club open days for seniors and juniors are this weekend at the courts in Queenstown Gardens. Both days will feature a BBQ. Club publicity officer James Penwell says all existing and potential new members are welcome to come enjoy some social tennis.

Penwell adds it’s not available to people who’ve been members in the past but have had a break away from the club.

“It’s only available to people who are not previous members of the club. It’s a one-off, one-time only thing.”

The club is holding its open days this weekend – senior players are to turn up from 1pm on Saturday, whilst the juniors open day is from 1pm on Sunday.

Senior interclub tennis starts on October 15, with ladies in the morning and men’s from 1pm. The Twilight Mixed Doubles competition kicks off on October 18 and 20.

Existing club president Teresa Chapman was re-elected at the AGM last Tuesday.
