Going off: John Butler performs under the Peregrine Winery stage roof in Gibbston Valley

John Butler Trio has led a stellar line-up of acts to entertain a packed Peregrine Winery concert in Queenstown.
The hit Australian band kicked off just as darkness loomed about 8.40pm under the winery’s distinctive curved roof.
They played a high-energy set that included hit song Zebra, some spellbinding instrumentals and jams, and finished with a hard-rocking version of Close to You.
At times, the clamour in the moshpit led to people being squeezed up against the barriers near the stage – prompting Butler to order people in the nicest way possible to “step the f..k back” and “back the f..k up”.
The gig in the natural amphitheatre – attracting everyone from young party-goers to families - wound up about 10pm.
Queenstowner Andrew Humpries, 26, says he’s seen John Butler Trio before in the United States and he’s a class act.
“I think it was amazing – it should have been longer, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love him.
“He delivered. He played all his classics. It was absolutely worth it. $80 to see all those acts – are you kidding me?”
Invercargill mates Grace Black – celebrating her 19th birthday – and Scarlett Cuthill say the show lived up to their expectations.
Black: “We got tickets as soon as we saw it on the Internet and realised it was my birthday too.”
Kiwi songstress Annabel Fay kicked off the show – part of the Summer Vineyard Tour – before Tiki Taane took to the stage.
The former Salmonella Dub member had a busy night – he played a short set featuring some of his best-known stuff including Always on my Mind before heading off do a gig at Subculture to help celebrate the club’s changeover to new owners.
American soul act Aloe Black and the Grand Scheme proved a big hit, particularly when they ripped out I need a dollar.
