Closed indefinitely: Cardrona Alpine Resort

Cardrona Alpine Resort has been forced to close for an indefinite period to avoid potential health and safety issues from its full oxidation pond.
Recent heavy rain, snow melt and high usage of facilities have led to the skifield’s pond, which stores grey water – a combination of storm water and used water – to almost overflow.
Cardrona’s spokeswoman Nadia Ellis says it’s the first time it’s happened and the water will need to be trucked off the mountain before it spills over.
“It’s really unusual,” Ellis says.
“The water consumption up here has increased dramatically. We’ve been watching it quite closely and closing the skifield is the responsible thing to do.
“[Staff] are investigating ways of how to manage the problem. We’re going to do whatever it takes to bring the level down to make sure it doesn’t overflow.”
Ellis hopes the ski area will re-open in the next few days.
Skiers and snowboarders who have pre-booked multi-day lift passes will get a full refund.
Nearby skifield Treble Cone is offering discounted rates for Cardrona season pass holders while the pond is emptied.
