If you’ve got an idea for a community or cultural event during next year’s Rugby World Cup – here’s your chance.

The call’s going out for Queenstowners to come up with event proposals for the sporting showcase.

“We welcome any ideas, from the mild to the wild, on what these events could be,” Destination Queenstown’s marketing boss and festival events subcommittee head Graham Budd (pictured) says.

Queenstown’s Rugby World Cup committee is already planning celebrations in the region, but the resort could tap into funding from the Lotteries Commission.

“There’s $9 million up for grabs across New Zealand to fund community and cultural events that fall around the Rugby World Cup. We currently don’t have any funding to put events on here so that’s a big carrot,” Budd says.

“To be eligible for a slice of the pie we need to lock in the regional events we’re planning before applications close on September 17.”

Festivities must be held during the Rugby World Cup – from September 9 to October 23 2011.

No games are being played in Queenstown, but the resort will host the English and Irish rugby squads and a qualifying team in September for training camps.

Punters with ideas – wacky or otherwise – have until next Monday to send them through to DQ, where a few most likely to attract visitors and “create a buzz for the local community” will be selected.
