Queenstown Primary pupils (from left) Alijah Prakash, Zyiac Goodman and Ruby Kyle could benefit from a recent $2000 donation to help pupils affected by dyslexia.

Teacher Jan Chappell (back, left) last week received a cheque from Cookie Time worker Jenny Kean.

The school is one of 10 nationwide to receive cash, thanks to an initiative by the Cookie Munchers Charitable Trust and the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand.

Dyslexia is known as a “gift” that affects people’s ability to read and write, but in turn they’re creative, multi-dimensional thinkers.

One in every 10 Kiwis is thought to be affected.

Chappell says the money will be put to good use: “We’ll be using it for initiatives to help children who have dyslexia through professional development. It’s absolutely marvellous.”

The government only acknowledged dyslexia exists last year so it’s currently inadequately funded through schools.

“Every bit helps,” says Chappell.
